The Enneagram is a  compilation  of  powerful wisdom that came from spiritual adventurers  seeking the answers to the eternal human questions such as ‘Why are we the way we are?, What makes people to do what they do? Why are we so different from each other? and How can we resolve those differences?   

The Enneagram is a  system for deep personal enquiry and spiritual  growth that helps us understand our own strategies for coping with life and teaches us how to become more flexible, have more compassion for other people and above all to create powerful and fulfilling relationships that work for everyone.

How The Enneagram works

We already think of ourselves as types because our everyday language is littered with ‘type’ words.

Is she my type.  The actor is typecast, he’s not the type to do this and ‘oh that’s so typical of him’

The Enneagram divides the human personality into 9 basic types which are referred to by number and often by descriptive names. 

Whilst all of us have the seed of the 9 types inside us we are each influenced by a core type of behaviour and that becomes our Enneagram type.

As you study the Enneagram and discover your type, you’ll soon find yourself talking in Enneagram because it makes sense.   ‘Oh I’m not surprised she did that she’s a 4’ or ‘Of course he would want it to happen that way ‘he’s an 8’ and so on.   Be careful, this stuff is very addictive because it explains so much.

Some people believe that we are born with our basic type template and others believe that it begins to develop from within the womb or early childhood. in reaction to what’s going on around us.  However we formed we each have a particular set of coping strategies to help us live in the world.

Positive and Negative

All 9 types have distinct enlightened  and primitive qualities.

When we are driven by the more primitive qualities of our type we become more anxious, afraid and frustrated and less able to enjoy life to the full.    

As we get to know ourselves and and actively work on developing our potential, we gain more access to the enlightened characteristics and the other ones go to sleep.   And when we relate from the positive aspects, we are much more attractive.

And the great news is that we have the seed of all 9 types inside us.  Getting to know other people via their type will open you to the qualities that they have and which may be lying dormant in you.   And as you become more able to access the qualities of each type, your relating skills will sky rocket.

The 9 types

At the top level we have the 9 types each of whom believe they have to be a certain way to be accepted in the world

Type 1 - Believe they have to be perfect.  They have a perfect idea of how the world should be and want to make everyone including themselves life up to it..

Type 2 - Believes they have to be loving.  They look for love by helping people and trying to anticipate what everyone else wants.

Type 3 – Believes they have to be successful.  They seek to accomplish things and are often driven by what they think others value.

Type 4 – Believe they have to be unique and different.  They spend time exploring their inner world looking for meaning and sometimes they get caught up in drama and pain.

Type 5 – Believe they have to have knowledge.  They try to make sense out of life by accumulating information and are in danger of distancing themselves from human contact in the process.

Type 6 – Believe that they have to be prepared.  They question everything and try to forsee problems.  And sometimes they worry so much they’re afraid to do anything or conversely they rush headlong into danger to try and quell their fears.

Type 7 -  Believe they have to put a positive spin on life.  They like new experiences, fun and variety and sometimes they don’t take the time to follow through as  they rush too quickly onto the next fun activity.

Type 8 – Believe they have to be in control.   They are action packed powerhouses who  they want to take charge of their lives and sometimes they rid roughsod over othe r people’s lives too.

Type 9.  Believe they have to avoid conflict.  They are peaceful and go with the flow and like comforting routines and sometimes they try so hard to fit in they forget that they have needs too.

Beyond the Types

For some people the 9 types are more than enough to help you get a basic understanding of what makes you and others tick, but they aren’t the full story.

And if you really want to get good at this relating game, it will pay you to explore the deeper layers of the Enneagram where you will discover a mine of information that will more easily help you type yourself and others.  And the more you know about someone the easier it is to relate successfully with them.

The Wings

Each core type has what Enneagram talk defines as ‘the wings’. The wings are the numbers on either side of your type on the Enneagram Symbol.

Each type has a strong influence from one or other of the wings.   For example if your core type is seven, you will either have a 6 or an 8 wing which has a direct influence on your type as you take on some of the characteristics of the wing which blend uniquely with the characteristics of your type to give you even more definition.

So you aren’t just a 7, you’re a 7 with an 8 wing or a 7 with a 6 wing and both of those types will be subtly different whilst still displaying the predominant characteristics of the 7 type.

The Subtypes

There are 3 subtypes in every Enneagram Type represent the 3 basic human instincts that influence us.   We all have these instincts but one of them will be more predominant.

The 3 instincts are the desire to survive, the desire to mate and the desire to be social.

Survival Instinct– People who have this subtype tend to be more focused on issues around the survival instinct. They are concerned about having enough food to eat to putting attention on things like  home comforts, security and savings and insurance.

Mating Instinct – People who have this subtype tend to be more focused on issues around the mating instinct. They worry about sexuality, romance, relationship, love, divorce, jealousy, being single

Social Instinct – These people focus on issues around the social instinct.  They are concerned about social causes, having enough friends, social recognition, being part of a community

How the Enneagram can help you

Tempting as it may be to rush around typing everyone in sight, our advice is don’t.   One of the mistakes most of us make when we first come across the information is to think that typing people is as easy as saying you’re a man or a woman.  It isn’t. . We often mistype ourselves and other people and then we lose all the advantages that this amazing tool has to offer

We always tell you to begin with yourself.  Typing yourself isn’t always easy. We advise you to take our basic assessment and the join our  Foundation Knowing You Knowing Them - Enneagram and NLP patterns track.    For a relatively minimal outlay, we will guide you over a period of 3 months to really get to know yourself and your type and teach you how to recognise the types in other people.

Where  possible we advise you to work with one of our enneagram trained coaches or attend one of our teleseminar courses for more personal help in getting to discover and know your  type

With Yourself

When you first get your type, you may be tempted to focus on the negative side.  You may even not want to be that type.   That’s quite normal.  Most of us don’t like to face our darker side, but you can relax safe in the knowledge that every type has it’s dark and light aspect.

Once you get over the fact that you’re a human being, something magical happens.  You start to like yourself and your type. You begin to see the positive side of yourself . From here it’s easier to address the things you want to do less of.   

Our basic enneagram track is designed not just to reach you about the enneagram, and NLP patterns of behaviour, but to encourage you with assignments designed to build self awareness.    The more aware you become, the more you can begin to catch yourself in the act and then you’ll get that wonderful tingle of awareness when you actually manage to stop your pattern running.

This is a huge result.  We all have patterns and studying the Enneagram and your own type will help you to be on top of your patterns rather than having them run amok with you.

With others

When you use the Enneagram to work with people it fosters an atmosphere in which enlightened relating can flourish.   

The Enneagram supplies us with information about what’s important to us and other people. We know how they like to be communicated with and how often and when not to.  We know what aspects of life turn them on and off.  We know their weak points and their strengths.

This information enables us to adapt different relating styles to best meet the needs of the different types.  

This doesn’t mean we can’t be ourselves, it just means that we become much more considerate of what works for other people.   There may be some things we can say easily to an Enneagram 7 that an Enneagram 1 would really find hard to accept if said in a particular way and when we learn to convey the information to a 1 in a 1- way they totally get it. 

Like this we create a deep personal rapport and they feel as if they’re truly understood. If you think someone understands you you’re much more likely to tolerate their foibles, enjoy being around them, want to cooperate with them and share more of yourselves with them.  Now that’s what we call the building blocks of enlightened relating.

A brief History of The Enneagram

The Enneagram is a  circular symbol with 9 points and the word comes from the Greek, enya meaning 9 and gramma meaning diagram.

It is an ancient symbol based on sacred geomerty.  It has elements in common with mathematics, the Khaballa, Buddhism, Sufi teachingsand Taosim.  And if you’re interested in the esoteric and mystical roots, you can find out more here [link to deeper history for the fives!]. 

There have been three main devleopers of the Enneagram over the years

Gurdjieff a spiritual teacher used the Enneagram to explain the cosmic laws of the universe

Oscar Ichazo, a psychologist and teacher created the descriptions of the personality types and mapped them to the Symbol

Claudio Naranjo – a Chilean anthropoligist conducted extensive interviews with people to reasearch the personality types and gave the first Enneagram Teaching in 1970 in California.

And now we at eRelating are on a mission to spread the wonder of the enneagram to the entire world as one of the most important tools to enhance enlightened relating.
